Estimate calories burned doing lunges from the number of lunges or minutes, your body weight and intensity, or find how many lunges burn a calorie target.
How the Lunges Calories Calculator Works
This calculator estimates gross energy from body weight, activity time and a selected metabolic equivalent (MET). Gross calories include the energy used at rest during the same period. It estimates calories from a number of lunges (converted to time at a typical pace of 20 lunges a minute, which you can change), calories from minutes, or the minutes and lunges for a calorie target.
The oxygen-cost approximation uses 1 MET = 3.5 mL of oxygen per kilogram per minute and about 5 kcal per liter of oxygen. Convert pounds to kilograms with 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. These estimates use a constant MET for the entered activity period and are not individual measurements.
Illustrative Gross Calories by Activity Time
These examples use the general bodyweight-resistance category, 3.0 MET. They are time-based model estimates; at 20 lunges a minute, 10 minutes is about 200 lunges.
| Body Weight | Gross kcal in 10 Minutes | Gross kcal in 20 Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 130 lb | 30.96 | 61.92 |
| 160 lb | 38.10 | 76.20 |
| 180 lb | 42.86 | 85.73 |
| 200 lb | 47.63 | 95.25 |
| 220 lb | 52.39 | 104.78 |
How to Enter Activity Time
- Enter the time spent at the selected intensity, in minutes.
- Exclude rest periods unless the chosen MET represents the whole session, including rests.
- Choose a relevant activity category or enter a suitable custom MET. If you counted lunges instead, use the number-of-lunges mode and set your pace.
- Enter body weight, without adding dumbbell or barbell weight to it. Added load can change the appropriate activity MET.
Activity Intensity Presets
The 2024 Adult Compendium conditioning categories include lunges among broader activities. The adult values apply to ages 19–59 and do not guarantee the energy cost of a particular person’s lunge technique.
| Activity Category | MET | Compendium Code |
|---|---|---|
| General bodyweight resistance | 3.0 | 02056 |
| Moderate calisthenics | 3.8 | 02022 |
| High-intensity bodyweight resistance | 6.5 | 02057 |
A custom MET must be greater than zero. Duration and the gross calorie target can be zero, producing a zero result in the respective calculation. This tool does not apply fixed external-load or lunge-depth multipliers.
Examples
- 150 lb, 20 minutes, 3.0 MET: body weight = 68.0388555 kg; gross energy ≈ 3 × 3.5 × 68.0388555 × 20 / 200 ≈ 71.44 kcal.
- 70 kg, 20 minutes, 3.8 MET: estimated gross energy ≈ 93.10 kcal.
- 70 kg, 93.10 kcal target, 3.8 MET: estimated duration ≈ 93.10 × 200 / (3.8 × 3.5 × 70) ≈ 20 minutes.
Common Questions
- Can I enter reps per leg?
- Yes. Count every lunge on both legs (20 per leg = 40 lunges). The calculator turns the count into active time using your lunge pace.
- Should I add external weight to body weight?
- No. Enter body weight and select a MET appropriate to the activity. Simply adding carried weight to the body-weight term is not this model.
- Are the results net calories above rest?
- No. The reported values are gross energy, including resting metabolism during the activity period. Pace, technique, rest periods and individual physiology can change actual energy use.
