Mountain Climbers Calorie Formula
This calculator uses the standard MET-to-calorie conversion. It estimates energy used during the time you are actively doing mountain climbers.
- MET = the selected standardized activity intensity
- 3.5 = the standard oxygen-use value in mL/kg/min assigned to one MET
- Weightkg = body weight in kilograms

Mountain-Climber Intensity Values
The calculator offers two standardized intensity choices.

The 11-MET option is the more direct match because its Compendium description names mountain climbers. The 7-MET option provides a lower estimate for deliberately controlled intervals, but it is mapped from the broader moderate-effort HIIT category rather than an isolated mountain-climber measurement.
How the Calculator Works
- Convert body weight to kilograms when pounds are selected.
- Use 7.0 or 11.0 MET according to the chosen effort.
- Calculate total calories per active minute with the Compendium equation.
- Multiply that rate by cumulative active time, or divide a target total by the rate to solve for active time.
- Subtract a standardized 1-MET resting component to show an additional above-rest estimate.
Total Calories vs. Calories Above Rest
Total calories are the primary result because they come directly from the Compendium conversion. They include the standardized energy that would have been used at rest during the same time. The secondary calories above rest result subtracts one MET:
This subtraction is a calculator-derived comparison, not a separately published mountain-climber value. Individual resting metabolism does not always equal the standardized one-MET assumption.
What Counts as Active Time?
Enter only the cumulative seconds or minutes spent performing mountain climbers. For example, ten 30-second work intervals equal five active minutes, even if the full workout takes ten or fifteen minutes after recovery periods are added. A 70 kg person performing vigorous mountain climbers for 10 cumulative active minutes uses the 11-MET setting.

The result is cumulative work time. Any recovery between intervals makes the full elapsed workout longer.

The calculator converts pounds to kilograms and seconds to minutes before applying the equation.
What Changes the Estimate?
- Body weight: With the other inputs fixed, the estimated calorie rate changes directly with body weight.
- Intensity choice: The 11-MET rate is approximately 57% higher than the 7-MET rate.
- Active time: Doubling cumulative work time doubles the estimate when weight and MET value remain unchanged.
- Rest accounting: Entering elapsed session time instead of active work time will overstate mountain-climber calories.
Assumptions and Limitations
- The 2024 Adult Compendium provides standardized population values, not an individual metabolic measurement.
- The 11-MET entry groups mountain climbers with other vigorous HIIT movements; it is not an isolated calibration of one exact technique or cadence.
- The controlled 7-MET option is inferred from a general moderate-effort HIIT entry.
- The model assumes the selected intensity stays constant throughout the entered active time.
- Cadence, range of motion, technique, fatigue, fitness, body composition, and recovery can change actual energy use.
- The standard Compendium is principally designed for generally healthy adults aged 19 to 59 and may be less representative when a health condition, disability, medication, age, or other factor materially changes energy expenditure.
- The estimate covers the entered activity period only and does not add post-exercise oxygen consumption.
- There is no authoritative calories-per-repetition coefficient in this model, so repetitions are not used as an input.
