Obstacle Course Race Calories Burned Formula
The calculator uses a distance formula in Basic mode and a time-and-effort formula in Advanced mode.
Calories Burned = Body Weight(lb) × Race Distance(mi) × 0.85
Calories Burned = Body Weight(kg) × Finish Time(min) × Effort Rate
- 0.85 = standard obstacle-race calorie factor for a typical course
- Effort Rate = 0.14 for light, 0.175 for typical, and 0.21 for hard courses
- Race Distance = total course length in miles
- Finish Time = total time on course in minutes
Typical Obstacle Course Race Calorie Burn
- 3 miles: about 250 to 500 calories
- 5K course: about 300 to 550 calories
- 10K course: about 550 to 900 calories
- 10 miles: about 850 to 1,500 calories
What Is an Obstacle Course Race?
An obstacle course race combines running with climbing, crawling, carrying, balancing, and grip-intensive obstacles. Popular race formats range from short 3-mile events to long 10-plus-mile courses with hills, mud, and repeated strength demands.
What Changes Your Calorie Burn?
- Body weight: heavier racers usually burn more calories per mile and per minute.
- Race length: longer courses increase total calorie burn directly.
- Obstacle density: more walls, crawls, carries, and climbs raise the total.
- Terrain: mud, sand, hills, and water crossings increase the work required.
- Finish time: more total time on course usually means more calories burned.
Example Calculation
A 180 lb racer on a 5-mile course would burn:
Calories Burned = 180 × 5 × 0.85 = 765 kcal
In Advanced mode, an 82 kg racer finishing a hard 70-minute course would burn:
Calories Burned = 82 × 70 × 0.21 = 1,206 kcal
