Calculate rowing stroke rate from total strokes and time, or find missing rows, elapsed time, SPM, and recommended rate ranges by goal.
Rowing Stroke Rate Formulas
Stroke rate is the number of completed strokes per unit of time. In the original solver, choose total strokes, elapsed time, or stroke rate as the target and enter the other two required values. The stopwatch workflow provides the same relationship in practical counting units, while Rate Targets displays broad training ranges.
| Solve target | Required inputs | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Strokes per minute | Counted strokes and elapsed seconds | strokes × 60 / seconds |
| Elapsed time | Counted strokes and stroke rate | strokes × 60 / SPM |
| Total strokes | Stroke rate and elapsed minutes | SPM × minutes |
| Time per stroke | Stroke rate | 60 / SPM |
How to Count Consistently
Count complete drive-and-recovery cycles for a fixed interval. Longer counting windows reduce rounding noise. On an erg, compare rate with split and watts; on water, also consider boat class, conditions, and technical consistency. Preset ranges are orientation points rather than universal prescriptions.
