Calculate rugby union or rugby league scores from tries, conversions, penalty goals and drop goals, with a points breakdown for each scoring type.
Rugby Points Formula and Method
5 × 3 + 2 × 2 + 3 × 1 + 3 × 0 + 7 × 0 = 22
Separate ordinary tries from penalty tries before adding the score. A union penalty try is already a complete seven-point award, so entering it again as a try or conversion would double-count it. Select the code before entering the scorecard; the international league preset differs from union on try, penalty-goal and dropped-goal values.
How to Use This Calculator
Select the scoring code, then enter the credited event counts. Leave a field blank or enter zero for events that did not occur. Keep union penalty tries separate from other tries; include league penalty tries in the league try count. Select Calculate, then open Calculation details to check the points added.

Interpreting the Result
The event breakdown is useful for checking a scoreboard against a match report. Successful conversions can be fewer than the entered convertible tries, but cannot exceed them. Union penalty tries have no conversion; league penalty tries are included in the league try count. A score total alone does not uniquely identify the combination of scoring events. Competition variations must be handled from the applicable rulebook.
Union penalty tries are separate seven-point awards with no conversion. The league preset uses international one-point drop goals; competition-specific variations are excluded.
Assumptions and Common Input Errors
Each scoring event contributes its selected code’s point value. Use credited records rather than mixing estimates with final totals. A blank count is treated as zero.
Saving and Revising a Scenario
A successful calculation is saved in this browser and can be restored on the next visit. Editing an input keeps the previous result with an Inputs changed warning until Calculate is selected again. Reset clears the inputs and saved calculation, and returns to rugby union.
