Calculate tackle success rate as a percentage from successful and attempted tackles, or find the successes or attempts that match a given rate.
Tackle Success Rate Formula and Method
Tackle success (%) = Successful tackles (count) × 100 ÷ Attempted tackles (count)
Use successful and attempted amounts from the same defined record. To combine compatible records, calculate 100 × total successes ÷ total attempts after adding the underlying amounts. An unweighted average of individual percentages gives records equal weight rather than weighting them by their attempt counts.
How to Use This Calculator
Choose success percentage, successful amount, or attempted amount, then enter the other two quantities within the field limits. The success-percentage input runs from 0 to 100. Numeric fields start blank. Select Calculate and review the result, breakdown and calculation steps.
Worked Example
With the example inputs in the table, the result is 80 %. The totals refer to the same observation period.
24 × 100 ÷ 30 = 80
Input and Example Guide
| Input or category | Example or weight | Entry guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Successful tackles (count) | 24 | Use the stated unit; retain available precision. |
| Attempted tackles (count) | 30 | Use the stated unit; retain available precision. |
| Tackle Success Rate | 80 % | Calculated result for the entered example. |
Interpreting the Result
The three modes use rate = 100 × successful ÷ attempted, successful = rate × attempted ÷ 100, and attempted = 100 × successful ÷ rate. A zero attempted amount is undefined, including 0 ÷ 0. Zero successes with positive attempts give a valid 0% rate. In attempted-amount inverse mode, 0 successes and 0% are underdetermined because every positive attempted amount fits; positive successes at 0% have no finite solution; 0 successes at a positive percentage give no valid positive attempted amount.
Fractional known scenario amounts are supported, and inverse results are not automatically rounded. These are algebraic scenario equivalents, not partial actual tackle records. Actual recorded events use whole counts. A rounded published percentage need not reconstruct the original whole event totals.
Assumptions and Common Input Errors
Keep the successful amount within the attempted amount and use the same subject, observation period, sport and provider coding. Attempts equal successes plus unsuccessful attempts only when those categories form an exhaustive, nonoverlapping partition under the chosen definition. Attempted minus successful is not automatically an official missed-tackle statistic.
A Six Nations Rugby report provides one made/missed-tackle example of success-rate reporting; it does not establish a universal coding rule. In Opta’s association-football definitions, tackles won and tackles lost are both completed tackle events, while missed tackles are defined separately. Do not automatically reinterpret football won/lost totals as rugby completed/missed totals. Declare the success and attempt definitions used for your data.
Saving and Revising a Scenario
When browser storage is available, the last successful input snapshot is saved and is validated and recomputed on return. Editing an input retains the previous successful result with an inputs-changed notice; select Calculate to update it. Reset clears this calculator’s saved state and returns numeric inputs to blank.
