Scrabble Word Score Formula
The calculator uses two formulas, one for each mode.
Quick score adds the face value of every tile:
Score = sum(letter_value)
Board play applies letter premiums, the word multiplier, and the bingo bonus:
Score = (sum(letter_value * letter_multiplier)) * word_multiplier + bingo
- letter_value: face value of the tile in the chosen game (0 for blanks)
- letter_multiplier: 1 for normal, 2 for double-letter, 3 for triple-letter
- word_multiplier: 1, 2, 3, 4 (double-double), or 9 (triple-triple)
- bingo: 50 in Scrabble or 35 in Words With Friends when all 7 tiles are played
Quick score mode just sums tile values, treating ? as a blank worth 0. Board play mode multiplies premium-square tiles first, sums them, applies the word multiplier, then adds the bingo bonus. Blank positions zero out a tile even if you typed a real letter, which matches how a blank is scored on the board.

Worked Examples
Example 1: QUIZ in Scrabble, no premiums. Q=10, U=1, I=1, Z=10. Total = 10 + 1 + 1 + 10 = 22 points.
Example 2: JAZZY in Scrabble with the first Z on a triple-letter square and the whole word on a double-word square. Tiles: J=8, A=1, Z=10, Z=10×3=30, Y=4. Sum = 8 + 1 + 10 + 30 + 4 = 53. Apply double word: 53 × 2 = 106 points. Enter the word as JAZZY, set triple-letter positions to 4, and choose Double word.
FAQ
How do I score a blank tile? A blank counts as 0 points no matter which letter it represents. In quick mode, type ? in place of the blank. In board mode, type the letter you played and add its position to the blank positions field.
Do premium squares still count if a tile is placed on a square used in a previous turn? No. Premium squares only apply on the turn the tile is first placed. Only enter DL, TL, DW, or TW positions for newly placed tiles.
What is a double-double or triple-triple? When a single play covers two double-word squares, the multiplier is 2 × 2 = 4. Two triple-word squares give 3 × 3 = 9. The calculator includes both options in the word bonus dropdown.
Why do Scrabble and Words With Friends give different totals for the same word? The two games use different tile values and different bingo bonuses (50 vs 35). Switch the game dropdown to match what you are playing.
