Swim Stroke Index Formula
SI = v * DPS * M

- SI is the stroke index in meters squared per second (m²/s)
- v is the average swimming speed in meters per second (m/s)
- DPS is the distance covered per counted stroke in meters (m)
- M is the cycle multiplier: 2 for freestyle and backstroke when you count individual arm strokes, 1 for breaststroke and butterfly, and 1 for any count already taken in full stroke cycles
- D is the swim distance in meters (m)
- T is the swim time in seconds (s)
- N is the number of strokes you counted
The calculator has three modes built on these formulas. The first mode takes a real swim, meaning a distance, a time, and a stroke count, computes speed and distance per stroke, applies the cycle multiplier, and returns the stroke index along with pace per 100, stroke length, and stroke rate. The second mode skips the swim details and multiplies a known speed by a known stroke length, which is useful when your watch already reports both. The third mode rearranges the formula to DPS = SI / v and tells you the stroke length and maximum stroke count you need to reach a target index at a given pace. Yard distances are converted to meters internally so results stay comparable to published values.

Example Problems
Example 1. You swim 100 meters of freestyle in 1:30 and count 64 individual arm strokes. Speed is 100 / 90 = 1.11 m/s. With the freestyle multiplier of 2, your 64 arm strokes make 32 cycles, so distance per cycle is 100 / 32 = 3.13 m. The stroke index is 1.11 * 3.13 = 3.47 m²/s, which sits in the upper half of the typical freestyle range and above the 3.06 average.
Example 2. You swim 50 meters of butterfly in 35 seconds with 22 strokes. Butterfly uses a multiplier of 1, so the 22 strokes are 22 cycles. Speed is 50 / 35 = 1.43 m/s and distance per cycle is 50 / 22 = 2.27 m. The stroke index is 1.43 * 2.27 = 3.25 m²/s, near the top of the typical butterfly band.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good stroke index? It depends on the stroke and on your strategy. For trained swimmers counting per cycle, freestyle averages about 3.06, backstroke 2.89, butterfly 2.51, and breaststroke 2.15. Rather than chasing a universal number, compare your index against your own baseline at a fixed pace: if your split time holds while the index rises, your stroke is getting more efficient.
Should I count arm strokes or full cycles? Either works as long as you tell the calculator which one you used. On freestyle and backstroke, one full cycle is two arm strokes, so a manual count of every hand entry needs the multiplier of 2, while most swim watches already report cycles. Mixing the two methods in the same training log will make your index appear to halve or double, so pick one method and keep it consistent.
Is a higher stroke index always better? No. The index rewards covering more distance per cycle at speed, but over-gliding can raise stroke length while your pace collapses, which defeats the purpose. Judge the index against a stable split time, and remember that some champions, such as sprint breaststrokers, deliberately race with shorter, faster strokes and a lower index because that is what produces their best times.
