Calculate your USMC PFT score and class from your pull-ups or push-ups, plank, and 3-mile run or row by age and gender.
USMC PFT Formula
Your total Physical Fitness Test score is the sum of the points you earn on three events. Each event is worth up to 100 points, so the maximum total is 300.
PFT = S + P + A
Each event is scored on a sliding scale between a minimum performance worth the floor points and a maximum performance worth the cap points. For a repetition event such as pull-ups or push-ups, the points rise as you do more reps:
Points = Fmin + (Reps - Rmin) / (Rmax - Rmin) * (Fmax - Fmin)
For a timed run or row, a faster time earns more points, so the time difference is measured from the maximum-score time:
Points = 100 - (T - Tmax) / (Tmin - Tmax) * 60
- PFT: total Physical Fitness Test score, from 0 to 300 points.
- S: strength event points from pull-ups or push-ups.
- P: plank points.
- A: aerobic points from the 3-mile run or 5000 meter row.
- Fmin, Fmax: the minimum and maximum points the event can award for your age and gender.
- Rmin, Rmax: the reps that earn the minimum and maximum points.
- T: your finish time in seconds; Tmax earns 100 points and Tmin earns the passing floor.
The strength field lets you choose pull-ups or push-ups. Pull-ups can reach the full 100 points, while push-ups cap at 70 points, which limits the highest total you can post with push-ups to 270. The plank is scored on a single age and gender neutral scale, with 1:10 worth 40 points and 3:45 worth the full 100. The aerobic field accepts the 3-mile run or, for eligible Marines, the 5000 meter row, and an altitude option adjusts the time standards for events run at 4,500 feet or higher. The calculator scores each event by age group and gender, then adds them and assigns your class.
Event Point Ranges and Classes
The first table shows how each event is bounded. Exact rep and time standards shift with age and gender, but the point ceilings and the plank scale below are fixed.
| Event | Minimum points | Maximum points |
|---|---|---|
| Pull-ups | 40 | 100 |
| Push-ups | 40 | 70 |
| Plank (1:10 to 3:45) | 40 | 100 |
| 3-mile run or 5000 m row | 40 | 100 |
The second table shows the class you earn once you pass every event. You must reach at least 150 total points and meet the minimum in all three events. Missing any single event minimum fails the whole test, no matter how high your total is.
| Class | Total points |
|---|---|
| 1st Class | 235 to 300 |
| 2nd Class | 200 to 234 |
| 3rd Class | 150 to 199 |
| Fail | Below 150 or any event missed |
Example Problems
Example 1. A 23-year-old male does 18 pull-ups, holds a 3:00 plank, and runs 3 miles in 21:00. In the 21 to 25 group, pull-ups score 40 points at 5 reps and 100 points at 23 reps, so 18 reps gives 40 + (18 – 5) / (23 – 5) * 60, which rounds to 83 points. A 3:00 plank is worth 82 points. A 21:00 run, against an 18:00 cap and a 27:40 floor, gives about 81 points. The total is 83 + 82 + 81 = 246 points, a 1st Class PFT.
Example 2. A 28-year-old female does 30 push-ups, holds a 2:00 plank, and runs 3 miles in 24:00. In the 26 to 30 group, push-ups score 40 points at 18 reps and 70 points at 50 reps, so 30 reps gives 40 + (30 – 18) / (50 – 18) * 30, which rounds to 51 points. A 2:00 plank is worth 59 points. A 24:00 run scores about 82 points. The total is 51 + 59 + 82 = 192 points, a 3rd Class PFT. Switching to pull-ups would raise the strength ceiling above the 70-point push-up cap.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a passing USMC PFT score?
You need at least 150 total points and you must meet the minimum standard in all three events. Hitting only the per-event minimums adds up to less than 150, so you have to score above the floor in at least one event. Failing any single event fails the entire test even if your total would otherwise pass.
Should I do pull-ups or push-ups?
Pull-ups can earn the full 100 points, while push-ups are capped at 70. If you can reach a strong pull-up count, pull-ups give you a higher ceiling and a better shot at 1st Class. Push-ups are a valid option, but the 70-point cap limits your maximum total to 270.
Is the plank scored differently by age or gender?
No. The plank uses one scale for every Marine. A hold of 1:10 earns the 40-point minimum and a hold of 3:45 earns the full 100 points, regardless of age or gender. Only the strength and aerobic events use age and gender based standards.
