AF PT Formula

The Air Force fitness assessment scores three performance components and adds them into a single composite score out of 100 points.

Total Score = Cardio Points + Upper Body Points + Core Points
  • Total Score is the composite fitness score on a 0 to 100 scale.
  • Cardio Points are earned from the 1.5-mile run or the 20-meter HAMR shuttle run, worth up to 60 points.
  • Upper Body Points are earned from push-ups or hand-release push-ups, worth up to 20 points.
  • Core Points are earned from sit-ups, cross-leg reverse crunches, or the forearm plank, worth up to 20 points.

You choose one event in each category and your raw result (a time or a repetition count) is converted to points using the scoring tables for your gender and age group. The cardio component carries the most weight because it is worth 60 of the 100 points. To pass, you need a composite score of at least 75 points and you must meet the minimum standard in each individual component. Falling below a component minimum means you fail the test even if your total reaches 75.

Component Weighting and Score Categories

Each component contributes a fixed maximum to the 100-point total. The table below shows how the points are split.

Once you have a composite score, it falls into one of the following categories.

Composite ScoreRating
90.0 and aboveExcellent
75.0 to 89.9Satisfactory (pass)
Below 75.0Unsatisfactory (fail)

A passing test requires both a composite of 75 or higher and meeting every component minimum.

Example Problems

Example 1. An Airman runs the 1.5-mile in a time that earns 54 points, completes enough push-ups to earn 18 points, and holds a plank that earns 17 points. The composite score is 54 + 18 + 17 = 89 points, which is a Satisfactory pass.

Example 2. Another Airman earns 60 points on the run, 20 points on hand-release push-ups, and 18 points on cross-leg reverse crunches. The composite score is 60 + 20 + 18 = 98 points, which is an Excellent rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What score do you need to pass the Air Force PT test?
You need a composite score of at least 75 points and you must meet the minimum standard in each component. If you score below the minimum on any single event, you fail the test even when your total is 75 or more.

How are the points divided across the test?
The cardio event is worth up to 60 points, the upper body event is worth up to 20 points, and the core event is worth up to 20 points, for a maximum composite of 100 points.

Can you choose which exercises to perform?
Yes. You pick one cardio event (1.5-mile run or the 20-meter HAMR), one upper body event (push-ups or hand-release push-ups), and one core event (sit-ups, cross-leg reverse crunches, or the forearm plank). Each option is scored on its own table for your gender and age group.
