Wedding Budget Formula
The calculator works in two directions. Given a total budget, it allocates it across categories by typical percentage shares:
Ai = B * pi
Given a guest count, it first estimates the total from a per-guest cost, then applies the same allocation:
B = G * C
Variables:
- Ai is the dollar amount for category i, and pi is that category’s percentage share
- B is the total wedding budget
- G is the guest count
- C is the cost per guest – roughly $150 for budget-friendly weddings, $300 for average, $500 for upscale, or a custom figure
Choose a mode at the top. “Break down a total budget” takes the number you have and returns each category’s allocation. “Estimate from my guest count” builds the total for you first – useful when you have a guest list but no idea what it implies. The default split: venue and catering 45%, photography and video 12%, flowers and decor 10%, music and entertainment 8%, attire and beauty 8%, stationery and favors 4%, rings 3%, transportation 2%, and an 8% buffer.

Venue and catering = 30,000 x 0.45 = $13,500. Photography and video = 30,000 x 0.12 = $3,600. Flowers = $3,000, music = $2,400, attire = $2,400, stationery = $1,200, rings = $900, transportation = $600, buffer = $2,400.
Example 2: Estimating from a guest list.
You expect 120 guests at an average style ($300 per guest):
B = 120 x 300 = $36,000. Trimming the list to 100 guests brings the estimate to $30,000 – guest count is the single biggest cost lever.
