Convert a 40-yard dash time to average speed in several units, or calculate the 40-yard time required for a target average speed.

Required: elapsed time for exactly 40 yards.

Enter the full elapsed time in seconds.

40 Yard Dash to MPH Formula

This calculator divides the exact 40-yard distance by elapsed time. The result is the athlete’s average speed over the whole run, including the acceleration from a stationary start.

Average Speedₘₚₕ = (40) / (1760) ÷ (Time₍seconds)) / (3600) = (81.8181818) / (Time₍seconds))

One yard is exactly 0.9144 meter, so 40 yards is exactly 36.576 meters. The calculator uses those exact conversion definitions before rounding the displayed result.

Average Speed Is Not Top Speed

A 40-yard runner begins at zero velocity and accelerates through much of the dash. Dividing total distance by total time therefore cannot reveal the fastest instant in the run. Peak speed requires split timing, tracking data, or another measurement that captures velocity over a shorter interval.

The NFL’s combine description treats the 40-yard dash as a speed and acceleration drill and records 10-, 20-, and 40-yard splits. Those splits provide information that a single finish time cannot.

Converting a 40 Time to MPH

Enter the elapsed time in seconds. The calculator reports average mph first, followed by km/h, m/s, yards per second, and the average time per 10 yards. All are different expressions of the same distance divided by time.

Solving for a Target Average Speed

Target mode reverses the equation. It converts the selected speed unit to meters per second, then divides 36.576 meters by that speed.

Required Time = (36.576 meters) / (Target Average Speed₍m / s))

Example

A 4.50-second 40-yard dash covers 36.576 meters at an average of 8.128 m/s. That equals 18.18 mph or 29.26 km/h. It does not mean the runner’s fastest instant was 18.18 mph.

Timing and Distance Assumptions

  • The distance is exactly 40 yards from start to finish.
  • The entered time represents the complete same-distance trial.
  • The calculation does not adjust for reaction protocols, hand timing, surface, wind, footwear, or timing-system placement.
  • Comparisons are most useful when athletes use the same timing method and start procedure.
