Hand Time to FAT Conversion
Hand timing and fully automatic timing, commonly shortened to FAT, use different start and finish procedures. A fixed adjustment can support seeding or rough comparison, but it does not transform a stopwatch observation into an electronic measurement.
Direct 0.24-Second Method
The direct method adds 0.24 second to the entered hand time:
This is the simplest workflow for football testing comparisons. The adjustment remains visible in the results, and the custom option lets a coach use a documented local convention instead.
NFHS Seeding Method
The National Federation of State High School Associations describes a track seeding procedure that first rounds a manual time up to the slower tenth, then adds 0.24 second. For example, a raw 4.51 is rounded to 4.6 before the adjustment, producing a 4.84 comparison time.
That NFHS procedure is included as an explicit option. It is track seeding guidance, not an NFL combine timing rule.
Reverse Conversion
Reverse mode subtracts the selected adjustment from FAT. A direct offset has a direct arithmetic inverse. NFHS rounding does not: multiple raw hand readings can round to the same tenth. For that method, the reverse result is labeled as a converted manual seed time rather than an original stopwatch reading.
Why Timing Systems Differ
A human timer responds to a start cue and finish event with reaction delay and judgment. A fully automatic system starts and records the finish electronically under a defined protocol. Differences can vary by operator, cue, sensor placement, start procedure, and event distance, so one universal correction cannot describe every setup.
Example
Using the direct convention, a 4.50-second hand time plus 0.24 second produces a 4.74-second FAT comparison. With the NFHS seeding option, a 4.51 hand time is first rounded up to 4.6 and then converted to 4.84.
Assumptions and Limitations
- The selected adjustment is applied uniformly to the entered result.
- The calculator does not account for an individual timer’s reaction behavior.
- Times should be compared only when distance, start protocol, surface, and timing placement are consistent.
- The NFHS option is intended for the published seeding procedure and should not be presented as a measured FAT result.
