Punting Net Average Formula

Net punting average starts with gross punt yards and subtracts return yards plus the selected touchback deduction. The remaining net yards are divided by the number of punts:

Net Average = (Gross Punt Yards - Return Yards - (Touchbacks × Deduction)) / (Punts)

The default NFL method uses 20 yards per punt touchback because an untouched scrimmage kick that becomes a touchback is placed at the receiving team’s 20-yard line under the NFL punt rule. A custom method is available for another league, dataset, or analytical convention.

Inputs for Net Punting Average

Gross punt yards are the total distance credited before return and touchback effects. Return yards are the total credited on punt returns. Touchbacks are entered as a count and multiplied by the visible deduction. All four inputs must come from the same statistical scope.

Solving for Gross Punt Yards

Target gross-yards mode reverses the equation:

Required Gross Yards = Target Net Average × Punts + Return Yards + Touchback Deduction

The result is an exact arithmetic total. Official statistics generally record yardage as whole yards, so planning with a minimum recorded total may require rounding up.

Solving for Return Yards Allowed

Return-yard mode holds gross yards and touchbacks fixed, then calculates the total return yards compatible with a target net average. A negative answer means returners would need to finish with net negative yards; it is not automatically a calculation error.

Example

With 53 punts, 2,657 gross yards, 159 return yards, and six touchbacks at 20 yards each, net yards equal 2,378. Dividing by 53 gives 44.87 net yards per punt, displayed as 44.9.

Blocked Punts and Statistical Definitions

Individual and team stat feeds can differ in how certain blocked punts, deflections, returns, penalties, and credited yardage affect their totals. This calculator performs the displayed arithmetic; it does not decide official scoring credit. Use the punt count and all yardage fields from one provider and one scope. If a provider publishes net yards directly under a different convention, use that published figure for comparisons within that feed.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • The default 20-yard touchback deduction is specific to the cited NFL punt touchback spot.
  • A custom deduction changes the arithmetic model but does not change a league’s official stat rules.
  • Return yards may be negative when the selected data source credits net losses on returns.
  • Net average does not separately describe hang time, placement, fair catches, punts inside the 20, coverage quality, or opponent behavior.
