Food Weight From an Energy Plan
This calculator links two quantities that can be checked before a trip: the total energy in a food plan and the food’s weight. In weight mode, it multiplies the daily kilocalorie target entered by the user by planned trail days plus explicit extra food days. It then divides that total by the energy density calculated from the actual foods and labels. In reverse mode, it multiplies a known packed weight by density and divides the energy across planned trail days.
The main equation is food weight = total planned kilocalories / kilocalories per unit of weight. Density can be entered as kilocalories per ounce or kilocalories per 100 grams. The calculator converts both to a common basis before calculating. It does not choose a calorie goal from age, body weight, distance, or any other personal characteristic.

These rows demonstrate the equation, not recommended intake. Different menus can have different density because water content, packaging, and food choice change weight.
Finding Energy Density From Labels
Use the Calories and serving-weight values that describe the same serving. For example, a label showing 250 Calories for a 2-ounce serving has a density of 125 kilocalories per ounce. For several foods, total all label Calories and total all food weights, then divide the combined energy by the combined weight. Include packaging in a separate pack inventory if it is carried but not part of the edible-food density.
Worked Example
Five planned trail days plus one extra food day at 3,000 kilocalories per day equals 18,000 kilocalories. At 125 kilocalories per ounce, the calculated weight is 144 ounces, or 9 pounds and approximately 4.08 kilograms. The planned five-day portion is 7.5 pounds and the explicit one-day extra portion is 1.5 pounds.
Using the Result
Compare the calculated total with an itemized menu and actual scale weight. Route difficulty, trip duration, appetite changes, resupply reliability, storage rules, and emergency planning can all affect a food plan. The output is most useful when the daily target and density come from a deliberate plan rather than a generic preset.
