Estimate a disc golf round rating, find a target score, or infer an SSA using a chosen points-per-throw relationship.
Unofficial Round Rating Formula
Estimated rating = 1000 + (SSA − round score) × rating points per throw
What the Inputs Mean
Round score is the total number of throws after penalties. Scratch scoring average, or SSA, represents the score associated with a 1000-rated performance for a particular layout and set of conditions. SSA is not the course par. Points per throw is the amount by which the modeled rating changes when the score changes by one throw. The calculator needs both SSA and points per throw; par alone is not enough.
Choose the Points-per-Throw Value
The PDGA Ratings System Guide gives about 10 points per throw as a reference for typical 18-hole layouts with SSA from 48 to 53. It also describes compression: a throw can be worth more on an easier layout and less on a harder or longer one. This tool leaves that value visible and editable instead of inventing a universal conversion. Use a value appropriate to the same layout and conditions as the SSA.
How to Use the Three Solve Modes
Choose unofficial round rating when the score and reference assumptions are known. Choose score needed when comparing a desired rating with those assumptions. Choose implied SSA when a known score and round rating are available alongside a points-per-throw estimate. That last result reconstructs only the chosen linear relationship. It does not derive an official course rating or establish a permanent SSA for the layout.
Worked Example
With SSA 50, a score of 60, and 10 points per throw, the result is 1000 + (50 − 60) × 10 = 900 points. Improving to 59 gives 910 points in this model. Conversely, a target of 950 gives 50 + (1000 − 950) ÷ 10 = 55 throws. Keeping the assumptions unchanged makes the one-throw comparisons in the result useful for a practice goal.
Why the Target Score Rounds Down
A lower disc golf score produces a higher rating in this model. If the exact threshold is 55.4 throws, 55 meets the target and 56 does not. The primary answer therefore rounds down, while the supporting result retains the fractional threshold. A mathematically positive target may still be impossible for a particular number of holes. The tool does not know your hole count, layout, or minimum attainable score.
Rearranged Relationships
Target score = SSA + (1000 − desired rating) ÷ points per throw. Implied SSA = score + (rating − 1000) ÷ points per throw. No distance, speed, or physical-unit conversion belongs in these equations. Throws and rating points are different quantities, and points per throw connects them. Keep round score as a whole number when it is an observed result; SSA and a modeled score threshold may be fractional.
Assumptions and Limits
Official ratings use event scoring data and the PDGA process. A layout’s SSA can change with conditions, so this estimate should not be presented as a verified tournament rating, an official player rating, or a UDisc rating conversion. The numerical input bounds are calculation limits rather than sport eligibility rules. The result is not clamped to a conventional-looking rating range: an extreme set of assumptions can produce an extreme number, which is a reason to review the inputs.
Reference Table
| SSA | Round score | Points per throw | Modeled rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 50 | 10 | 1000 |
| 50 | 55 | 10 | 950 |
| 50 | 60 | 10 | 900 |
| 50 | 60 | 8 | 920 |
| 50 | 60 | 12 | 880 |
