Enter the weight used on a machine chest press to calculate a rough estimate of the free weight bench press load. This calculator works both ways – if you know one value, the other can be estimated.

Use the tabs below. Enter any value to estimate the other, or estimate your 1RM and an informal strength level.

Tip: different machines vary widely. 0.80 is a common rough heuristic, but your results may be higher or lower.

Safety note: Results are rough estimates—machine resistance and biomechanics vary by brand, setup, and range of motion. Use conservative loads, prioritize technique, and avoid attempting a true 1-rep max without proper warm-up and a spotter. If you have pain, injuries, or medical conditions, consult a qualified professional.

Machine Chest Press to Bench Press Estimate Formula

The following formula provides a rough estimate of the free weight bench press load from a machine chest press weight.

BP = MCP * CF

Variables:

  • BP is the Bench Press weight (rough estimate)
  • MCP is the Machine Chest Press weight
  • CF is a conversion factor (often around 0.8 as a heuristic, but it can vary)

To estimate the bench press load, multiply the machine chest press weight by a conversion factor (often shown as 0.8). Because machines differ in leverage, friction, range of motion, and stabilization demands, your actual bench press may be higher or lower.

What is the Machine Chest Press to Bench Press Conversion?

This conversion is a rough estimate of a free weight bench press load based on the weight used on a machine chest press. It can help you pick a starting point, but it is not a guaranteed one-to-one equivalence.

How to Estimate the Bench Press Load?

Follow these steps to estimate your bench press load from your machine chest press:

  1. Determine your machine chest press weight (MCP).
  2. Choose a conversion factor (CF), commonly shown as 0.8.
  3. Apply the formula: BP = MCP * CF.
  4. If you have the bench press weight and want a rough machine estimate, divide by CF.
  5. Verify your result using the calculator above and adjust conservatively based on how it feels.

Example (rough estimate):

If your machine chest press weight is 200 pounds and you use a conversion factor of 0.8, then the estimated bench press weight is calculated as follows:

BP = 200 * 0.8 = 160 pounds
