Single Elimination Bracket Formula and Method
Championship games = entrants − 1
Each championship-bracket game removes one contender, so eliminating all but one of N entrants requires N minus one games. The next power of two supplies a balanced bracket size, while empty first-round positions become byes. A bye advances an entrant without adding a played game.

Worked Example
For 12 entrants with no third-place game, 11 championship games determine one winner. A 16-slot bracket has four first-round byes and four bracket rounds. The played-game counts are 4, 4, 2, and 1; adding a third-place game raises the tournament total to 12 without adding a championship round.

Interpreting the Result
The optional third-place game is outside the championship path and adds one match when at least four entrants are present. Rounds are bracket stages, not necessarily days. The counts do not choose seeds or include qualifying rounds or other consolation games; enter only the participants that start this championship bracket.
This is single elimination with all byes in the first round. Seeding, consolation brackets and venue scheduling are separate decisions.
Assumptions and Common Input Errors
Each championship matchup has one winner and eliminates one entrant. All byes occur in the first round and do not count as played games. Counts assume every required matchup is played; later withdrawals, walkovers, replays, and additional consolation events need separate treatment. Blank, fractional, or out-of-range entrant counts are rejected.
Saving and Revising a Scenario
When browser storage is available, a successful calculation is saved and recomputed on a later visit, with its result labeled Restored result. Editing retains the previous answer and labels it Previous result until Calculate succeeds again. Reset clears the entrant field, result, errors, and this calculator’s saved data, and returns the third-place option to No. Storage failures are reported without preventing calculation.
