Compare a swim time with B through AAAA thresholds you enter from one consistent standards table, without relying on a bundled or potentially outdated official dataset.
How the Swim Time Standards Calculator Works
Swim standards are dated lookup values, not a universal formula. This calculator compares a swimmer time with six thresholds you enter from a single B-through-AAAA table row. It intentionally ships without an official standards dataset.
Comparison Rule
A standard is achieved when the swimmer’s integer-centisecond time is less than or equal to that threshold. The calculator checks from fastest to slowest: AAAA, AAA, AA, A, BB, then B. Thresholds must be strictly ordered as AAAA < AAA < AA < A < BB < B.
At an exact boundary, the swimmer earns that tier. A time one hundredth slower may fall to the next tier. The result also shows the buffer inside the achieved standard and the improvement needed for the next faster one.
| Situation | Comparison | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Exactly on a threshold | Swimmer time = cut | That tier is achieved |
| Inside a tier | Swimmer time is faster than its cut | Buffer equals cut minus swimmer time |
| Between two cuts | Faster tier missed; slower tier met | Slower of the two tiers is reported |
| Slower than B | Swimmer time > entered B cut | No entered standard; improvement to B shown |
Choosing Consistent Inputs
All six thresholds must come from the same organization or program, edition, pool course, age group, category, stroke, and event distance. Entering a short-course-yards B time with a long-course-meters AAAA time produces an invalid ladder even if the numbers happen to remain ordered.
Target Mode
Select a tier to display its entered cut and the exact improvement needed from the swimmer’s current time. If the swimmer already meets the tier, the calculator reports the remaining buffer instead. This is a direct comparison; it does not predict training progress.
Worked Boundary Example
If an entered AAAA cut is 22.39 and the entered AAA cut is 23.49, a swimmer time of 22.39 earns AAAA. A time of 22.40 misses AAAA by one hundredth but still earns AAA. These values illustrate boundary behavior only and are not bundled standards.
Assumptions and Limitations
The calculator cannot verify that the entered table is official, current, correctly transcribed, or applicable to the swimmer. It does not determine eligibility, qualification, meet entry, or record status. Confirm the governing document and validity period before relying on any result.
