Enter the torque and the distance from the center the torque is applied to calculate the weight of the system.

Torque to Weight Formula

The following formula is used to convert torque to a weight. To calculate the weight from torque, simply divide the torque by the distance (lever arm length).

W = T / D
  • Where W is the weight
  • T is the torque
  • D is the distance

In this case, the weight units will depend on the units for torque and distance.

For example, if torque is in N-m and distance is in m, then the weight would be in Newtons. If the torque is in lb-ft, and the distance is in feet, then the weight would be in lbs.

Torque to Weight Definition

To convert torque to weight, divide the total torque by the distance from the center of the object that the torque is applied at. This is also known simply as force since weight is a force.

Example Problem

How to convert torque to a weight?

First, determine the torque being applied to the object. for this example, the torque is found to be 1,000 newton-meters (n-m).

Next, determine the distance from the center the torque is being applied at. Using an accurate measurement, this is found to be 40 meters(m)

Finally, using the formula to convert the torque to weight.

W = T/D

= 1,000 N-m / 40 m

= 25 N

= 5.620 lbs.
