How the Treadmill Incline Equivalent Calculator Works
The calculator asks a deliberately narrow question: is a supplied speed inside the range where Jones and Doust found a 1% treadmill grade matched the energetic cost of level outdoor running?
It converts pace or speed to meters per second, checks the unrounded value against inclusive boundaries of 2.92 and 5.00 m/s, and returns 1% only inside them.

Formula: inside range when 2.92 <= speed <= 5.00 m/s; inside result = 1%, outside result = no validated equivalent
Pace and speed conversions are supporting outputs. The calculator never derives geometric elevation gain, a hill angle, or a different incline outside the tested range.

Understanding Your Results
The grade or range status leads, followed by normalized speed, pace conversions, tested boundaries, and range position when eligible.
Inside means the speed meets this study’s range, not that 1% is universally exact for every runner, treadmill, duration, or environment.
Worked Example
A 5:00/km pace equals about 3.333 m/s and receives the 1% result. A 6:40/km pace equals 2.50 m/s and receives no validated equivalent.
Common Mistakes
Do not extrapolate below 2.92 or above 5.00 m/s, calculate vertical gain, or convert 1% grade to a general outdoor hill claim.
Assumptions and Limitations
The study involved nine trained male runners, six speeds, level road running, and measurements of approximately five minutes. Other populations, treadmill calibration, longer durations, and environmental conditions may differ.
