Wall Ball Shot Calorie Formula
A wall-ball shot combines a squat, upward acceleration, a throw to a target, a catch, and the next repetition. This calculator estimates energy from cumulative active time, body mass, and an explicit intensity assumption:
The above-rest result subtracts one MET before applying the same equation. It is a comparison with the standardized resting component, not a separate measurement.
Method Sources and Choosing an Intensity Model
The default 7.5-MET choice is a proxy from vigorous calisthenics and mixed circuit entries in the 2024 Adult Compendium. It is intended for controlled sets when cumulative active time includes ordinary short pauses.
The 12.7-MET option is intentionally labeled a small-study benchmark estimate. A 2025 study reported subgroup means during a 150-shot benchmark in 21 physically active adults: 12.96 MET among 14 men and 12.17 MET among 7 women. Weighting those published means by subgroup size gives approximately 12.7 MET. That value is an inference from a small, specific sample, not an official Compendium wall-ball entry or a universal value.
Why Shots and Ball Weight Do Not Set Calories
Repetition count, ball mass, and target height describe external workload. They do not capture squat depth, throw trajectory, catch mechanics, rest, technique, or human efficiency. For that reason, none of those fields changes the calorie equation. The calculator reports shots per minute and total ball load only as session-specific workload summaries.
Total ball load is not mechanical work and is not converted to joules. The ball does not begin at floor level on every shot, and external gravitational work omits the squat, acceleration, stabilization, catch, internal work, and metabolic efficiency.
Target-Time Mode
Target mode divides requested total calories by the selected MET calorie rate. An optional planned pace can project a shot count for that equivalent duration, but pace still does not feed back into calories. The result is a mathematical time at the same assumed intensity, not advice to prolong a session.
Benchmark Context and Example
A standard 150-shot benchmark includes load and target-height variations. Those details can be entered for workload context without silently changing intensity. For a 70 kg person completing 150 shots with a 20 lb ball in six active minutes at the 12.7-MET study option, the estimate is 93.345 total kcal and 85.995 above-rest kcal. Pace is 25 shots per minute and total ball load is 3,000 lb, or about 1,360.8 kg.
Safety and Calculation Limitations
The 7.5-MET option is a movement-family proxy, and the 12.7-MET option comes from one small benchmark study rather than broad validation. Technique, stature, fitness, work-rest structure, sensor error, and fatigue can change actual energy expenditure. The standard MET conversion is a planning estimate and does not add post-exercise afterburn.
