Inpatient Days Per 1000 Formula
Annualized inpatient days per 1,000 member-years = inpatient days ÷ member-months × 12,000
Member-months are the sum of enrolled members for each month in the measurement period. If direct member-months are unavailable, the calculator can estimate them as average members × months in the period.
Using the Calculator
Enter inpatient days and a positive member-month denominator for the same covered population, benefit scope, and measurement period. Inpatient days may be zero but cannot be negative.
The factor 12,000 annualizes the observed experience and scales it to 1,000 member-years: 12 months × 1,000 members. It is not a separate monthly rate.
Interpretation
This utilization measure supports consistent population comparisons, but it is sensitive to enrollment methods, benefit design, age and risk mix, network and admission definitions, and the length of the observation period. Use matched definitions when comparing plans or periods.
