TL = TW * 2

  • TW is the width of the trailer tires (inches)

What is a tongue length?


A tongue length is a measure of the correct length that the tongue of a trailer should be in order to properly support the weight of the trailer.

In general, a trailer tongue length should be two times the width of the tire/tires.

How to calaculate trailer tongue length?

The following example outlines how to calculate a trailer tongue length.

  1. First, determine the width of the tire. Measure the width of the tire or one of the tires use an accurate measuring tool. In this example, the width of the tire is measured to be 24 inches.
  2. Next, use the formula above to calculate the proper length of the trailer tongue:
