Trailer Tongue Weight Formula
The following formula is used to calculate trailer tongue weight from gross trailer weight and a tongue weight percentage.
TW = GTW \times \frac{P}{100}- Where TW is the tongue weight (lb or kg)
- GTW is the gross trailer weight (lb or kg)
- P is the tongue weight percentage (%)
To calculate tongue weight, multiply the gross trailer weight by the tongue weight percentage divided by 100. (A common guideline for many conventional bumper-pull trailers is about 10โ15% tongue weight, but always follow the trailer and hitch manufacturer specifications.)
What is tongue length?
Definition:
Tongue length is the physical length of a trailerโs tongue (drawbar) from the front of the trailer frame toward the coupler/hitch point. Manufacturers may specify related dimensions (for example, the coupler-to-axle distance) depending on the trailer design.
Tongue length affects turning clearance and how the trailer behaves when backing, but towing stability is primarily influenced by proper loading and tongue weight (along with axle placement and suspension), not tongue length alone.
How to calculate trailer tongue weight?
Example Problem:
The following example outlines how to calculate trailer tongue weight.
- First, determine the gross trailer weight (GTW). In this example, the gross trailer weight is 3,000 lb.
- Next, choose a tongue weight percentage. In this example, use 12.5%.
- Finally, calculate tongue weight (TW) using the formula.
TW = GTW ร (P / 100)
TW = 3000 ร (12.5 / 100)
TW = 375 lb
