Venus Weight Formula

W_venus = W_earth × (g_venus / g_earth)
  • W_venus: your weight on Venus (same unit as input)
  • W_earth: your weight on Earth
  • g_venus: surface gravity on Venus, 8.87 m/s²
  • g_earth: surface gravity on Earth, 9.80665 m/s²

The ratio g_venus / g_earth is about 0.9046, so a Venus weight is roughly 90.5% of the matching Earth weight. To go the other direction, divide instead of multiply: W_earth = W_venus / 0.9046. Mass does not change between planets; only the weight (the force gravity exerts on that mass) does.

Reference Values and Quick Conversions

Surface gravity on Venus is close to Earth's, which makes Venus the most "Earth-like" planet for weight, even though its surface conditions are not.

Example and FAQ

Example. You weigh 165 lb on Earth. Your Venus weight is 165 × 0.9046 = 149.3 lb. In newtons, that is your mass (165 / 2.2046 = 74.84 kg) times Venus gravity (8.87 m/s²), or about 663.8 N.

Why is Venus weight so close to Earth weight? Venus has about 81.5% of Earth's mass and a slightly smaller radius. The two effects nearly cancel, leaving surface gravity within about 10% of Earth's.

Does my mass change on Venus? No. Mass stays the same. Only the gravitational force on that mass changes, which is what a scale reads as weight.

Would a bathroom scale actually work on Venus? A spring scale would read the Venus weight directly. A balance scale, which compares masses, would read the same as on Earth.
