Calculate total bed days available from bed count and a time period or date range, or solve for beds and duration in days, weeks, or months.
Bed Days Available Formula
The basic bed days available formula is:
BDA = B * D
- BDA = total bed days available
- B = number of available beds
- D = number of days in the period
To solve for the number of beds:
B = BDA / D
To solve for the time period in days:
D = BDA / B
For a date range, the calculator counts both the start date and the end date:
D = End Date - Start Date + 1
BDA = B * D
The solve missing value tab uses the same relationship in different directions. If you leave total bed days blank, it multiplies beds by days. If you leave beds blank, it divides total bed days by days. If you leave the time period blank, it divides total bed days by beds.
The date range tab converts the selected dates into calendar days, includes both dates, and then multiplies by the number of beds.
Common Time Period Conversions for Bed Days
| Time unit | Days used | Example with 10 beds |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | 1 day | 10 bed days |
| 1 week | 7 days | 70 bed days |
| 1 30-day month | 30 days | 300 bed days |
| 1 90-day quarter | 90 days | 900 bed days |
| 1 365-day year | 365 days | 3,650 bed days |
How to Read Bed Days Available Results
| Result type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Total bed days available | The maximum number of patient bed days that could be provided during the period if every listed bed were available each day. |
| Number of beds | The average number of beds needed to produce the entered bed day total over the selected time period. |
| Time period | The number of days, weeks, months, quarters, or years needed for the bed count to produce the entered bed days. |
Example Problems
Example 1: Calculate total bed days available
You have 25 beds available for 30 days.
BDA = 25 * 30
Result: 750 bed days available.
Example 2: Calculate beds from total bed days
You have 1,400 total bed days available over 14 days.
B = 1400 / 14
Result: 100 beds.
FAQ
What does bed days available mean?
Bed days available is the total capacity of beds over a period of time. For example, 20 beds available for 10 days equals 200 bed days available. It measures potential capacity, not actual patient use.
Does the date range include the start and end dates?
Yes. If you use the date range tab, the calculator includes both the start date and the end date. For example, January 1 through January 7 counts as 7 days, not 6.
Is bed days available the same as occupied bed days?
No. Bed days available measures capacity. Occupied bed days measures actual use by patients. Bed occupancy is usually calculated by comparing occupied bed days with available bed days.
